Report reaching us from our correspondent in Ohaozara
Ajah Udoka Grace, have it that a young man, late Denis Nwaeke of Umueze 1 at
Okposi Okwu in Ohaozara LGA, Ebonyi state was murdered by the Fulani herdsmen
on 21st April, 2020 at following the fracas between the herdsmen and some
village youths within Esu River in Umunuka Okposi Ohaozara LGA.
An eye witness who was identified as Ndubuisi Nwani
Ngbani confirmed to our correspondent, that
the body of the deceased victim was found in the bush near the Esu River
on 24th April 2020, three days after the villagers had an issue with the
Fulani herdsmen in the area, for
attacking a commercial boat operator at Esu
River who was hired by a Fulani herder to cross him to where they camped
within the other side of the river,
which refused to pay him the
agreed amount of money for the boat fare, instead resort to attacking him.
The fracas between the herder and the commercial boat
operator attracted the attention of the sharp sand mining workers, that hustle
for their daily bread at the river who tried to settle the matter amicably for
both of them, but could not succeed due to the urgent intervention of the other
herdsmen inside the bush which came shooting sporadically immediately they were
telephoned by their brother over the matter.
Efforts made by the people was proved abortive as a
result of the pressure from the gunshot.
When contacted the king of the community, Chief Benjamin
Ogbonna alerted the Nigeria police who came very late to the scene of the
incident and could not do much to calm the situation, till it resulted to the
killing of the deceased and injuring of some persons.
The Ohaozara LGA chairperson, lady Nkechi Iyioku since
the incident has not said or done anything to bring the perpetrators to book or
return total tranquillity to the area.
Some indigent of the affected community has scampered for
their safety since there is no meaningful efforts by the Nigeria security to
address the matter suitably.
Many who spoke with our correspondent in the on the matter,
expressed their dissatisfaction on how the Nigeria police and the politicians
in the area especially those in active service are handling the matter with
lackadaisical approach. They maintained that they have lost confidence in
Nigeria government and her leadership, for playing partiality and politics of favouritism
to the Fulani herdsmen and the northern cabals.
It was confirmed beyond reasonable doubt, that the
politicians and the police are working to protect the Fulani herdsmen, that
have destroyed people's farms and other Agricultural investments of the people
with their cattle, Agriculture both farming and fishing are mainly the means of
their income and livelihood in the community.
Often times their farms are being destroyed yet no
damages paid to the Farmers by the cattlemen or any form of compensation from
the government.
