The Police can be defined as a body of officials
representing the civil authority of government with specific functions in policing
and maintaining public order and safety, enforcing the law, detecting and
investigating criminal activities of citizens of the State. The civil society
is the innocent and unarmed inhabitants of a certain geographical area.
When the police of any state are described with the word carnage,
it means it has completely lost its essence and can no longer be sustained. The
action of the Nigerian Police in the recent incident in Omosu/Igbere side of
Aba in Abia state which captured their brutality on innocent people and setting
private houses ablaze, describes a worse set of police carnage in the world.
The Abia State Media crew was at the scene to ascertain
the remote and immediate cause of such brutality that has caused loss of lives
and burning down of houses. Some eye witnesses who also happened to be
residents of the area but pleaded to speak on anonymity, in a summary said it was
a mere misunderstanding between armed police officers and two individuals who
refused to be extorted by the police officers on this particular day as against
the tradition in the area. The misunderstanding escalated to shooting and a
police man was killed. The loss of the police officer, provoked the rest of the
other officers and like it is the custom of Nigerian Police, they fled for
reinforcement and second battle. Nigerians knowing that the police would be
returning to cause mayhem, started fleeing from their homes in the troubled
area to a safe area. They moved massively out of the area before the arrival of
police for fear of being molested, brutalized or even killed.
When the police eventually arrived the next day, which
happened to be the NIGERIA'S Independent Day, they discovered that the
residents have all fled from their homes and leaving only the aged behind. The
heavily armed policemen started molesting, beating and arresting the old people
left behind.
The Police set buildings and shops ablaze. As at the time
of our visit, the total number of buildings torched were numbering twenty. This
brings us to the question of the function of the police in a democratic government
again. How can the POLICE whose primary duty is to protect, maintain and
enforce law be captured causing mayhem in a broad daylight? Killing those they
were supposed to protect.
The country, Nigeria is repeatedly committing crime
against humanity and with impunity. Nigeria has failed the people of Biafra.
Their security agencies are the worst in the world. We are urging the
International community to come to our aid as the government of Nigeria is
terrorizing the people with her security apparatuses.
